The new varieties and the territory: the winemaker asks and the geneticist answers

The genetic improvement of the vine, after years of activity concentrated in the central European countries only, has had a good momentum even in the foremost countries for wine grapes production. The genetic resistances have been the main purpose, sometimes the only one, that has led the Italian breeders to concentrate on how to develop in the new varieties at least resistance to peronospora and to oidium, with further increments aimed at aggregating more than one resistance to both major fungal pathogens. Two shortcomings have unfortunately emerged in recent years, that have however seen some of the new varieties presented and recorded in the national catalogue to arouse considerable interest, (i) the first relating to the emergence of new diseases till today controlled indirectly thanks to plant protection products widely used to control peronospora and oidium, (ii) the second deficiency was mainly connected to the qualitative aspects of the grapes, due to a fundamental defect in the worthy initiative of the breeders who, on  one hand, discussed with professionals the cultivation of the vineyard, but have scarcely interacted with those who transform grapes producing the most added value product, the wine. It is today mandatory, aware of this deficiency, to reset the breeding activity by listening to the oenologist, answering his questions, focusing on the product without aiming just at obtaining quality resistant grape varieties, but going further, taking into account new parameters: a new approach, that could reveal itself more successful, a further aid for the growth of modern viticulture.
